My experiences working as Cashier at Safeway: When I decided to find part-time work, I first considered working at the nearby Safeway grocery store where I regularly shopped. The most appropriate opening was for Checker/Cashier. I accepted that job offer where my responsibilities were to scan custmers' purchases and bag them, receive their payments, and return their change. I set a goal that every customer would leave my checkstand laughing. I was often successful, usually by sharing my favorite jokes such as "Would you like another bag for that long receipt?" At Christmastime in 2021, I wished every customer a "Merry Christmas" in my chuckling Santa voice, with my Santa beard and wearing my Santa hat. (Whenever I portray Santa, whether onstage for a large audience or in an informal situation, I become convinced that I really am Santa.) On Christmas Day, a customer remarked that it was a shame I had to work on Christmas. "Did you work yesterday too?" they asked. "Oh yes; it was exhausting!". "How late did you work?" "All night long! All those houses... All those chimneys...!"
