The Essence of Intercession
Colossians 1:9-14 - Dr. David P. Craig – March 4, 2011
Intercession Defined: “intercession is not so much placing our burdens on God’s heart but God placing his burdens on our hearts.” L. J. Ogilvie
Principles of Intercession from Paul:
[9] And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding,
- He prays continually for people he doesn’t even know.
- He asks that they will know and apply God’s will.
- He prays totally unselfishly.
[10] so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.
- He prays for their holiness, maturity, fruitfulness, and passion for God.
[11] May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy,
- He prays that they would rely on God’s power to be made manifest in their lives resulting in their endurance, patience, and joy.
[12] giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.
[13] He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son,
[14] in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. (Colossians 1:9-14 ESV)
- He thanks God for what He has done; what He is doing; and what He will do.
“Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.” (Hebrews 7:25 ESV)
The Essence of Intercession – Guide For Discussion & Further Study
Colossians 1:9-14 - Dr. David P. Craig – March 4, 2011
1) With reference to the Lloyd John Ogilvie quote at the beginning of the sermon outline try to delineate what you think God’s “burdens” are for His saints? Try to come up with at least 3. Try to support your answers with Scripture.
2) Why do you think Paul was able to be so “others” focused instead of “self-focused” while he was in prison? Try to derive your answers just from Colossians 1:1-14.
3) Paul contrasts life before Christ (BC) as the “domain of darkness” with the life after Christ (AC) as “inheritance of saints in light;” and “transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son.” Describe how these metaphors are powerful descriptions of the realities of your new life in Christ.
4) In accordance with Hebrews 7:25 what do you suppose Jesus is praying for you right now?
5) In your group spend some time praying for one another what Paul prayed for the Colossians.
