“How Firm is Your Faith in Christ?”
Colossians 2:1-5 – June 5, 2011 – Dr. David P. Craig
Five Principles For Building Up a Firm Christ-Centered Faith:
(1) For I want you to know how great a struggle I have for you and for those at Laodicea and for all who have not seen me face to face,
· A firm faith in Christ comes from a lot of time spent in intercessory prayer.
(2) that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God’s mystery, which is Christ,
· A firm faith in Christ comes from a lot of time spent with believers.
(3) in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
· A firm faith in Christ comes from seeking Jesus.
(4) I say this in order that no one may delude you with plausible arguments.
· A firm faith in Christ comes from comparing every teaching with Christ’s teaching.
(5) For though I am absent in body, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the firmness of your faith in Christ.
· A firm faith in Christ is the result of practicing the spiritual disciplines in the context of community.
Guide For Discussion: Colossians 2:1-5 – June 5, 2011
1) Read Colossians 2:1-5. Open up your time in your small group praying the same things for one another that Paul prayed for the church in Collosae and Laodicea. Summarize the key phrases or elements of Paul’s prayer and then pray these elements for one another and for our church body.
2) Most local churches grow, plateau, decline, and die in less than 100 years. Read Revelation 3:14-22. Do some detective work like Lt. Columbo and see if you can figure out why the church in Laodicea died.
3) Look over the Colossians 2:1-5 passage again. Also read Revelation 2:1-3:22 on the seven churches. See if you can list why these churches died, and what our church can do to survive and thrive until Jesus returns.
