Jesus: The Lord Over All Creation

Jesus: The Lord Over All Creation – Col. 1:16-17
Dr. David P. Craig – March 27, 2011

Colossians 1:16-17, “For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”

Jesus’ Relationship to Creation:

1)    He existed before creation (Col.1:15)
– Theologians refer to God’s self-existence by the term aseity.

Exodus 3:13-15, Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, “The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?” God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel, “The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations.

John 8:58, Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”

John 1:1-2, 14, 18, In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God…And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth…No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.

Revelation 1:8, 17-18, “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty…When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, “Fear not, I am the first and the last, and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades.”

2)    He created all things (Col.1:16a)

John 1:3, All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made.

Hebrews 1:2, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.

3)    All things exist for Him (Col.1:16b)

Psalm 100:3, Know that the LORD he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Acts 17:24-28a, The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place,

that they should seek God, in the hope that they might feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, for “In him we live and move and have our being’;

4)    He holds all things together (Col.1:17)

-    A devastating earthquake hit Colossae between 60-61 A.D.

Hebrews 1:3-14, He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.

For to which of the angels did God ever say,

      “You are my Son,

                  today I have begotten you”?

      Or again,

      “I will be to him a father,

                  and he shall be to me a son”?

      And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says,

      “Let all God's angels worship him.”

      Of the angels he says,

      “He makes his angels winds,

                  and his ministers a flame of fire.”

      But of the Son he says,

      “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever,

                  the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom.

      You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness;

      therefore God, your God, has anointed you

                  with the oil of gladness beyond your companions.”

And,   “You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning,

                  and the heavens are the work of your hands;

      they will perish, but you remain;

                  they will all wear out like a garment,

      like a robe you will roll them up,

                  like a garment they will be changed.

      But you are the same,

                  and your years will have no end.”

      And to which of the angels has he ever said,

      “Sit at my right hand

                  until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet”?

      Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?

John 8:19-24, hey said to him therefore, “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.” These words he spoke in the treasury, as he taught in the temple; but no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.

      So he said to them again, “I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.” So the Jews said, “Will he kill himself, since he says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?” ;He said to them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.”

Guide For Community Discussion
Colossians 1:16-17 – March 27, 2011

1)    Talk about some of the ways that God is Independent (His aseity) and contrast that with how you are dependent on Him. Also, reflect on how we need His intervention and are totally dependent on Him for our salvation.

2)    Read Psalm 139:1-18. Discuss how God’s involvement in creating, knowing, and sustaining you makes a difference in giving you purpose and meaning in life.

3)    Read Acts 17:24-28. How does living, moving, and having your being in God through Christ make you feel?

4)    Read Hebrews 1:1-14. What parallels do you see in this passage and Colossians 1:13-17? What Gnostic elements are refuted by the authors in both these texts? How does the real Christ give you sustenance for each day?
