Jesus Christ, Our Perfect Priest

SERMON NOTES FOR APRIL 3, 2011

“Jesus Christ, Our Perfect Priest”

Text: Various passages from Hebrews

Hebrews 1 : 1 - 3 (ESV)

In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.  The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.  After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.

Discussion Questions for April 3, 2011 sermon
"Jesus Christ, Our Perfect Priest"

A key concept in Hebrews is "better".
Look up the following passages and notice who or what is better than who or what.

Heb. 1:1-2

Heb. 7:18-22

Heb. 1:4

Heb. 8:6

Heb. 3:1-3

Heb. 9:12-14

Heb. 4:14-16

Heb. 10:34

Heb. 3:1 urges us to consider Jesus who is the high priest of our confession. How does the high priestly ministry of Jesus compare with what you know of the function of a high priest under the Mosaic law?

Read Gen. 14:17-20 and Heb. 7:1-10. Discuss how it is that Melchizedek is a priest superior to the Levitical priests.

Compare Heb. 4:14-16 and I Tim. 2:5. In what practical ways is it meaningful to you that Jesus is our high priest? What do you think is meant by the term "the throne of grace"?
