SERMON NOTES FOR APRIL 10, 2011

“Jesus Christ, Our Sufficient Sacrifice”

Text: Various passages from Hebrews

Introduction:

Purpose statement for Hebrews: Heb. 1:1-3

Why Do We Need A Sacrifice?

Because we are separated from God by our sin,
God must be propitiated (satisfied).  Heb.2:17

Ex. 25:17-22:"You shall make a mercy seat of pure gold. Two cubits and a half shall be its length, and a cubit and a half its breadth. And you shall make two cherubim of gold; of hammered work shall you make them, on the two ends of the mercy seat. Make one cherub on the one end, and one cherub on the other end Of one piece with the mercy seat shall you make the cherubim on its two ends. The cherubim shall spread out their wings above, overshadowing the mercy seat with their wings, their faces one to another; toward the mercy seat shall the faces of the cherubim be. And you shall put the mercy seat on the top of the ark, and in the ark you shall put the testimony that I shall give you. There I will meet with you, and from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim that are on the ark of the testimony, I will speak with you about all that I will give you in commandment for the people of Israel.

What Are His Qualifications?

He is the sinner's substitute  Heb.2:9

He is flawless  Heb.5:9, 9:14

Lev. 22:21-22: And when anyone offers a sacrifice of peace offerings to the LORD to fulfill a vow or as a freewill offering from the herd or from the flock, to be accepted it must be perfect; there shall be no blemish in it. Animals blind or disabled or mutilated or having a discharge or an itch or scabs you shall not offer to the LORD or give them to the LORD as a food offering on the altar.

Mal. 1:6-8, 13-14: "A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If then I am a father, where is my honor? And if I am a master, where is my fear? says the LORD of hosts to you, O priests, who despise my name. But you say, 'How have we despised your name?' By offering polluted food upon my altar. But you say, 'How have we polluted you?' By saying that the LORD's table may be despised. When you offer blind animals in sacrifice, is that not evil? And when you offer those that are lame or sick, is that not evil? Present that to your governor; will he accept you or show you favor? says the LORD of hosts. But you say, 'What a weariness this is,' and you snort at it, says the LORD of hosts. You bring what has been taken by violence or is lame or sick, and this you bring as your offering! Shall I accept that from your hand? says the LORD. Cursed be the cheat who has a male in his flock, and vows it, and yet sacrifices to the Lord what is blemished. For I am a great King, says the LORD of hosts, and my name will be feared among the nations.

He is the victor over Satan  Heb.2:14-15

How Do We Know God Is Satisfied?

Jesus entered the better tabernacle  Heb.9:11, 24

Jesus offered the better blood  Heb.9:12-14, 25-28

Jesus made the better choice  Heb.5:7-9, 10:8-10

Jesus assumed the best position  Heb.10:11-12, 12:2

How Does All This Affect Me?

I have confidence  Heb.10:19-22

I am to hold fast to my confession  Heb.10:23

I am to promote love and good deeds  Heb.10:24-25

Discussion Questions for April 10, 2011 sermon
"Jesus Christ, Our Sufficient Sacrifice"

Review the discussion in the sermon about the terms reconciliation, propitiation, and redemption. Some related passages are: 2 Cor 5:18-21, 1 John 2:1-2, 4:10, Heb. 2:17, Rom. 3:25, 1 Pet. 1:18-19, Col. 1:14, Isa. 53:10-11.

Compare Heb. 5:7-9 and Luke 22:41-44 and discuss the inner conflict Jesus experienced as He prepared to go to the cross.

What is the significance of the term once for all and once in Heb. 9:12, 26, 28? How does this relate to the Roman Catholic doctrine that in the mass the bread and wine become the actual body and blood of Jesus?

As Holy Week approaches consider what your plans are for Bible reading that will remind you of the immense price that was paid at Calvary in order that you might be reconciled to God. In this connection read Rom. 3:21-26.
