Sermon Title: "The Essence of Christocentric Living" - Sermon 26 of Colossians Series
Text: Colossians 3 : 1 - 4
The Essence of Christocentric Living
Colossians 3:1-4 – If then you have been raised with Christ, seek [keep seeking] the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
The bottom line in dealing with the battle of the world, the flesh, and the Devil:
When faced with temptation, the immediate gratification of sin will almost always triumph over the fear of its long-term consequences.
How do we Defeat the Power of Sin's Promise of Pleasure?
Answer #1: by faith in God's promise of a superior pleasure!
Psalm 16:1-2, “Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge. I say to the LORD, ‘You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.’”
Answer #2: by focusing on who Christ is – His sovereignty over creation and my circumstances.
Psalm 110:1, “The LORD says to my Lord: ‘Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.”
Answer #3: by remembering that by grace through faith in Jesus our past bondages are broken; we have power to live in the present; and we have glory awaiting us in the future.
Answer #4: by seeking and thinking about "things above" does not mean we are to ignore and neglect the daily tasks and responsibilities of life in the here and now.
The Christocentricity of Christians:
1) We have been raised "with Christ" in the past (Col.3:1),
2) We are hidden "with Christ" in the present (Col.3:3),
3) We will be revealed "with Christ" in the future (Col.3:4).
Warning: Not to be connected or united to Christ by grace alone through faith alone ends all hope of a break with the past, a power for the present, or glory in the future.
