Colossians 3:12-17
(12) Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, (13) bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. (14) And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. (15) And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. (16) Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. (17) And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Who We Are “in Christ” – 4 Motivators for Living for/in Christ:
1) Chosen (Col 3:12a; see Deut. 7:7-8; Eph.1:4)
2) Set apart (Col 3:12; see 1 Cor. 6:19-20)
3) Beloved (Col 3:12; see John 1:12)
4) Forgiven (Col 3:13-14; see Eph. 4:32)
What We Are Becoming “in Christ” – 8 Habits to Develop & Demonstrate:
1) Compassionate (Col 3:12; see Philippians 2:1ff.)
2) Kindness (Col 3:12; see Eph. 2:7; Titus 3:4)
3) Humility (Col 3:12; see Romans 12:3)
4) Meekness (Col 3:12) = power under control.
5) Patience (Col 3:12) = not retaliatory.
6) Forebearing (Col 3:13; see Rom. 2:4 & 3:25) = able to hold back judgment.
7) Forgiving (Col 3:13b; see Eph. 4:32)
8) Loving (Col 3:14; see 1 Cor. 13:1-13)
What Should Christ be “Ousiating” Out of You? – 4 Outflows of the Soul
1) Peace (Col 3:15a)
2) Thanksgiving (Col 3:15b)
3) His Word (Col 3:16)
4) Submission to His authority because of our new identity (Col 3:17)
Colossians 4:2-6
(2) Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. (3) At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison— (4) that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak. (5) Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. (6) Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.
How Should We Be Speaking Like Christ? 3 Primary Ways:
1) We should be praying (Col.4:2-3a) faithfully; watchfully; thankfully; and purposefully.
2) We should be proclaiming the Word of God (Col.4:3b-4).
3) We should be witnessing to the lost (Col.4:5-6)
