“Fully Alive – Here and Now”

Philippians 1:18b-26

1.     If you were to ask random people who live on Whidbey Island to fill in the blank to the following statement, “For me, to live is ____________________”, what kinds of things would they likely say?

2.     In verses Phil.1:18b-20, what is causing the Apostle Paul to rejoice? What does that tell you about his faith in God?

3.     As he writes the letter to the church at Philippi, the Apostle Paul is facing the certainty of martyrdom sooner or later because of his preaching the gospel of Christ. What words in Phil. 1:18b-21 are used in the text to describe Paul? What words would likely describe you under the same circumstances?

4.     There seem to be two basic responses anyone can have when facing the certainty of imminent death: courage and confidence or fear and shame. What would cause someone to have fear and shame at that event? What would cause others to have courage and confidence?

5.     Read Phil. 1:21, then unpack the phrase, “For me, to live is Christ…” What do you think that means? What does that mean on Monday morning or Thursday afternoon?

6.     From your knowledge of the Bible, what does the Apostle Paul know that might cause him to say that death means “gain”? What reasons can be found in Phil. 1:22-23?

7.     Using Paul as an example, what might Christians do to help other Christians grow in their faith and find joy in their lives? What can you do?

8.     From these verses, summarize what we can learn about death for the believer?

9.     On the basis of Phil. 1:18b-25, what can I do to more fully live the abundant life in Christ? What help do I need to grow into more abundant living?
